Until the 1950's, Richardson was a rural community of about 1,300 people when several events changed the town forever. North Central Expressway (U.S. 75) opened, connecting Richardson with downtown Dallas, Collins Radio Company relocated to Richardson, and Texas Instruments set up shop just south of the city limits.
More businesses located in Richardson over the years, creating the "Telecom Corridor," the nations second largest concentration of telecommunications companies. Richardson has more than 3,600 businesses, including 500 high-tech firms.
The Richardson Independent School District has been recognized as one of the top 25 school districts in the nation, and is also home to the University of Texas at Dallas. Richardson shares the Richland College Campus of the Dallas County Community College District with neighbor Garland.
